...........................................The following is from the review by Michael Fremer of STEREOPHILE:

"... I heard everything in three dimensions, with my listening perspective shifted almost as it would be live. When the Doctor changed to an artificial studio recording, the stage would flatten appropriately, or lay bare multiple microphones in three dimensions with such clarity that I could hear groups of musicians clustered around each. The recording-specific differences in perspective left me confident that there was nothing artificial or pumped-up about the mbls' portrayal of space. The sense of hall expanse with good live recordings, such as those made in Carnegie Hall, was so compelling that it was easy to forgive the speakers...

the sound —and it's a big sound— floated effortlessly in three-dimensional space as with no other speaker in my experience. More important, they created a believable musical reality...

The 101Es had an effortlessness, openness, transient clarity, and crystallinity that set them apart from all others I've heard —including electrostats. On a congested recording such as the Rolling Stones' Exile On Main St. (LP, German EMI Electrola pressing), the MBLs separated out the instrumental strands with unusual ease, and portrayed the strummed acoustic guitars with a visceral believability I'd never before experienced. Lesser speakers bury Ian Stewart's piano throughout the album's four sides, and while that hasn't happened with any of the gear reviewed here over the past five years, never has that piano popped as cleanly as it did through the 101Es. Mick Jagger's vocals on much of this set are purposefully recessed, but what the MBLs managed to do was place his voice in the most convincing three-dimensional backdrop I've yet heard from this recording..."

................................................The following is from the review by Jonathan Valin of THE ABSOLUTE SOUND:

"...What the 101Es are capable of is astonishing. At the right SPL, the Radialstrahlers have the best (which is to say deepest reaching, most naturally full and rounded, sensationally dynamic and extraordinarily lifelike) low end I've heard from any loudspeaker...It almost seems like a magic trick to hear a speaker of the 101E's modest dimensions produce such astonishing bass-range slam and trough-the-floor extension...the 101Es treble is every bit as remarkable as its bottom end. On cymballs, bells, or top-octave piano and winds, the 101Es sound so dinamically and harmonically complete and tree-dimensional that, at first, you may think that there's too much "there" there...the Radialstrahler's omni tweeters simply reproduce more of the instrument, the air that surrounds it... the effect is magically realistic...

it's not often, anymore, that a loudspeaker tricks me into thinking Joan Baez or Arthur Rubinstein or the Juilliard Quartet is "there" in the room... they throw images that are larger, less razor-cut, and more "bloomy", dinamically alive, and three-dimensional... the 101Es pull the ultimate magic trick: they make you momentarily forget you're listening loudspeakers...

MBL 101E´s stunning-looking, four-way, omnidirectional Radialstrahler References simply do it all: a treble like Maggie´s ribbons, a midrange like SoundLab´s stats, bass like Nearfield´s eight 18” subwoofers, soundstaging and coherence like Kharma´s RM 3.2s, dynamics like Avantgarde´s Trios, and a “disappearing act” second to none. To top all this off, the mbl 101Es have more lifelike presence than any speaker Jonathan Valin has heard in several decades – actually sounding “fool-you” real at select moments on select cuts – and are more convincingly stereophonic listened to off-axis than anything else around...

it is the single most-lifelike transducer I’ve heard. I could go on about the 101 E’s phenomenal low-level resolution, uncannily realistic treble, “you-are-there” midrange, and extraordinary bass, but what the 101 E really offers that no other loudspeaker does to the same degree is excitement...

Unlike conventional dynamic speakers, the Radialstrahlers do not require you to be seated in the middle to enjoy excellent imaging and soundstaging. You can sit (or stand) surprisingly far off-axis and still hear a wide, deep, layered stage...

The MBL 101Es, are not giants that require giant rooms to sound their best...the MBL 101Es are in many respects the best loudspeakers I've ever heard... these speakers will play more loudly, more cleanly and coherently (and less irritatingly) than any speaker I've heard… extraordinary low-level resolution, large scale dynamic clout, and lifelike presence…

Unlike many other multiway speakers, at moderate to very loud levels the Radialstrahlers sound extraordinarily "of a piece" from top to bottom. Indeed, they are among the most coherent loudspeakers I've heard...

The 101Es are also hight (perhaps highest) among the most open and boxless-sounding loudspeakers I've yet heard. Since they don't have enclosure and radiate in all directions, they sound extraordinarily freed-up…

With any music, at any reasonable level, the MBL 101E Radialstrahlers aren’t just World-beaters in dynamics or bass extension or treble clarity and purity or lifelike presence; they are also simply extraordinary with the duration of notes. Even with 'stats I've never experienced anything like this. The MBL's simply don't let go of the music, no matter how low-level it is. I've never heard any speaker reproduce "stopping transients" -the way a sustained piano note or guitar note or violin note mixes its changing colors with the colors of subsequently sounded notes before bending and gradually dying off into silence- better than the MBL 101Es. If you want to hear every bit of music that lives on the cusp between sound and silence, these loudspeakers should be at the top of your short list...

The Radialstrahlers' uncanny ability to sustain a note -not just as vague noise but as a very low level bit of music- allows you to hear such harmonies with a clarity unparalleled in my experience, outside of a concert hall or recital room..."
