For sale is a custom 6BG6 push pull tube amplifier handcrafted by Jim Nichols of JWN amps. Jim is a student of the renowned scratch tube amp builder Lance Cochrane. Here, Jim has taken Lance's famous circuit, and added some of his own magic. This amp features the 6BG6 power tube, basically a 6L6 with an anode cap. The 6BG6 is a superb but relatively unknown tube. Providing all of the sweetly authoritative sound of the 6L6 and 807, NOS examples of this tube are still available at bargain prices. A matched quad of NOS American 6BG6 can often be found for less than $25! At approximately 30 tube watts per side, this amp has enough grunt to power most any speaker system to neighbor-angering levels. Driven by a pair of 6SN7, this amplifier uses a 12AT/AU/AX7 of your choice as a phase splitter. One of the really unusual features of this particular amp is a split power supply, offering an increased level of power isolation and filtering. The massive vintage power transformer has two separate taps, so one was employed to feed the input tubes, and one feeds the power tubes. Both are separately tube rectified. The result is that this amp is very quiet, even on super sensitive 101 db/wm speakers! No hum or other naughty issues here. Included in this sale are the following tube compliment (slightly different than in the photos): Two complete sets of great testing vintage 6BG6 output tubes, (one set of beer bottle tubes by RCA seen in the photos and one set of tall glass tubes by Sylvania), one pair of Baldwin organ branded Sylvania 6SN7, one superb CBS black plate 12AU7, one Sylvania 5Y3, and one Sylvania 5U4GB. This is a no-holds-barred, hand crafted push pull amp that is sure to please. See the new issue of Positive Feedback for a great review by Lynn Olson of a very similar JWN 6BG6 amp. Also google Dick Olsher's glowing review of one of Jim's 807 units; also very similar to the amp for sale here. Both reviewers think the JWN amps compare well to amplifiers costing well over $10K! Not many amplifiers like this are available today. Don't miss this opportunity to get a great all-American, handcrafted hifi unit using a very special, easily available and super economical output tube, and all at a lower price than Jim now builds new commissions for. 7/10 for the industrial/hand built aspects, no functional issues. This will be packed very carefully because I care. Email with any questions, and thanks for looking!
