Perfect Condition - Plus!
This Mint Condition Classic has been Modified by John Hillig. ( Musicalconcepts.com ) Those who are looking probably know Mr. Hillig has spent over 40 years doing upgrades to the Iconic Hafler products.
This XL 280 was used sparingly as a Center Amp for 2 Center Speakers.
After acquiring a 5 channel Amp, this went into well protected storage.
Upgrades Include:
1). PA3B Class A Input Boards.
2). 78,000 microfarads of Upgraded Output Storage Caps.
3). Cardas Copper Bonding Posts
4). 24kt. Gold Input Jack's.
This Amp will compete with anything at any price point.

Decisions. I'm not familiar with the McCormick, but If I had a purpose for this one, I'd never let it go!
And If you are familiar with Hafler's basic design, you know they are literally immortal in build quality.
On of my 2 DH500's I built in 1981 as a Kit.
I've never taken it out of use.

Does it have this upgrade ? No.
It is the PA 3b.
Most of the difference is in the convenience of placement for the DIY customers.
John does claim some minimal improvement in sound, but it wouldn't be worth the cost of replacement.
The Elite, and Ultra could be done to the PA3B of you wish too, but again, for the 1000.00 to 1500.00 extra to go to platinum grade is not going to be a worthwhile upgrade dollar for dollar.
It's the diminishing return on the dollar issue, that all Audio products fall into. |

The Musical Concepts class A front end circuit boards change the entire character.
It has the Black background that only the finest amps can achieve.
The separation of instruments and the staging are in a whole different class.
Add to the the Output Storage Cap. Upgrade to almost 3X the original 280, and you get the feeling of never working the amp.

There is nothing else I wolud trade them for.
