These Magnepan 3.6r's were upgraded by John, (Peter Gunn) of Magnestand in 2008. This is the review that I sent him after getting them home and listening to them for a little while.
"I have to say these speakers are incredible. (modded 3.6's) The soundstage, detail, presence and realism is beautiful. After several hours of adjusting positioning and tweaking the angle, I think I have them set perfectly. They seem to melt away and the music fills the space. What a sonic treat. They are amazing and keep getting better and better. If they continue this way, I will have to start paying union rates for the musicians. I have never heard anything like them anywhere. They produce the most natural, present, transparent, life like and emotionally engaging soundstage. They are beautiful to see and wonderful to hear."
I must say, I feel the same about them today. He is an unbelievably talented craftsman, both with electronics and fine carpentry. Not to mention, he is one very good guy.
These speakers were powered by a McCormack DNA-2 Deluxe Revision A amplifier, an Aesthetix Calypso pre amplifier and Resolution Audio Opus 21 CD player with GNSC Reference Level modifications. The cables were all Purist Audio. Listening to the combination was pretty awesome. I also added a SVS Ultra 13 Sub Woofer for the lowest register. I had the low pass set at 40 as these modded maggies had wonderful bass on their own. Truthfully, I often listened without the sub, as I found the speakers much more coherent and believable on their own, but some music or my mood, just called for that extra floor. The only reason for selling, is that we are downsizing therefore my system is now for sale here on audiogon.
As for packaging and shipping, I picked them up directly from John, so I do not have factory boxes (which they would not fit anyway), so I will have them bubble wrapped, packed, boxed and insured before shipping. They will likely ship in two parcels (maybe three), one for the speakers and stands and one for the crossover boxes. The stands may have to be boxed separately also.
They ship from Canada and I will confirm packing/shipping/insurance charges once destination is determined. This cost and 3% Paypal fee is buyer's responsibility. I will provide all tracking information once established.

| All Maggies should have a room that beautiful to play in! Thanks Richard, The Douglas Fir certainly makes the room warm and inviting and the maggies would sing there. We worked with a company called Timberbuilt to design and build the house. Funny story about what we [filtered] the "Music Room".... I said to my wife that when it was done I might just put a lock on the door and she said "... and we'll see which side of the door it goes on." .... that kind of shut me up. Appreciate your message. | What is the recommended amp power? Hi There, Maggies like power. I ran the with a wonderful McCormack DNA 2 Revision A amp which was 300 watts into 8 ohms. That was ample power and made them sing. Cheers, brent |
| My amp is an integrated, Class D Solid State.
2 X 800 W / 4 Ohms should be lots. The speakers do require power as I said before, but your amp would be roughly 400 w per side into 8 ohms. That's lots of poop. Cheers, b |
