Amplifier is new, assembled January 2012 by an engineer with 30 years of vacuum tube experience. Tubes have less than 25 hours of use. If you are looking at this listing, then you know about this amp. With the right speakers, probably the most life-like, fast, and extended sound of anything available. No output transformer or phase splitter in the design to muddy the sound. All this accuracy comes at the price of heat and low output power. So, the unit needs good ventilation and your speakers should be 100 db + and at least 8 ohms impedance. Perfect for horns. I used this SE OTL with Zu floor standers and achieved satisfactory SPLs.
Note to bidders: I am selling because I built a slightly more powerful version based on the Svetlana 6P45C at 4 WPC. I will demo the Transcendent at my home for local buyers in Eastern PA. This is a very low power amp that will not shake your listening room, and it requires extremely efficient speakers which can tend to highlight low levels of line noise. I will not accept returns due to claims of insufficient power or excessive noise, because I believe the amp is functioning as intended and measures well. With my Zu speakers and high impedance tube pre-amp connected using unshielded (Kimber-type) interconnects, AC line noise is slight but audible at zero signal and there is no perceptible difference between right and left channels. I expect with shielded cables noise may be inaudible. This amp has the most recent input configuration recommended by Bruce Rozenblit. I measured AC noise at the output of 0.002 volts with the inputs open and zero output load, and 0.000 volts at the output with the inputs shorted (again zero output load). This is as low as my volt meter goes. Transcendent’s specification for the amp is <200uv (0.2mv or 0.0002v), which is below the range of my meter, but I have no reason to expect the amp is out of spec. It has no output transformer to filter noise and no push-pull component to cancel noise. As a result, it is more finicky than some regarding interconnect shielding, wire length, and routing. If dead quiet background or room-shaking volume are your top criteria, and you want plug and play, please don’t bid. Something like the Nelson Pass First Watt solid state may be a better choice for lower noise and greater headroom, but in my opinion it is less liquid and involving than the Transcendent. The Transcendent amp is both fast and extended, but to get the most out of it, you must have the patience and ability to fuss around and optimize things, while recognizing its limitations. If this is not you, buy a low input impedance solid state amp or a transformer-coupled SET and be happy.
