Employing only two output tubes, this circuit provides 120 watts without stressing or pushing these tubes to their limit, and with the lowest output impedance and distortion of all the Quicksilver amplifiers, the Mono 120 brings a new level of performance to this power range. An on-board bias meter allows individual adjustment of each output tube and, with low-noise power supplies and circuitry, the Mono 120 can still be used on very efficient speakers. The 180 Joules of energy storage provide an effortless dynamic response, transmitting the full musical impact of sudden shifts from soft to loud. The Mono 120 has a black chassis and chrome-plated transformer covers. MIKE SANDERS :QUICKSILVER AUDIO Mike Sanders is the heart and soul of Quicksilver Audio. He has an interesting history. He has experience working as a recording engineer, and was the first sales manager for Magnepan. While working at Magnepan, he developed one of his first tube amps, the 8417 monoblocks. At that time, IIRC, Magnepan was distributed by Audio Research who marketed the Magnepan as an Audio Research speaker made by Magnepan. IIRC, his first amp was the huge MS-190, a 95 watt per channel stereo amp. Only a hundred units were shipped however. Mike went solo and moved west. The company was helped out significantly when The Absolute Sound reviewed his amp and its editor, Harry Pearson, proclaimed the 8417 amp to have the most "fabulous" midrange he had ever heard. That helped sales significantly and help insure the success of the company. Quicksilver has always been a minimalist company. No advertisements, no review samples (reviewers have to buy their samples !): all serve to keep company finances simple and low. The result is a better deal for the consumer as they are not paying for slick advertising. Such advertising can consume as much as 50% of a company's profits, and, believe me, those costs are passed on to the consumer ! That simplicity also carries on with his designs. Mike is one of the few manufacturers who actually designs and specs his own output transformers. The designs, while appearing very basic, stress reliability over the ultimate in performance. Mike feels, rightly, that music is to be enjoyed and the stress of an unreliable piece of equipment will not add to the peace of mind that listening to music is supposed to provide. Do not mistake the simplicity for lack of sophistication, however. Quicksilver Audio has employed and implemented several novel design innovations and reacts to the changing conditions in the marketplace, particular in regards to tube supplies. Quicksilver started off as being very industrial in design. When looked at from an engineering point of view, the designs make sense. Wiring is simplified, internal layouts are simple, precise, and direct. In recent years, however, cosmetics have improved ( with the help of his wife ! ). The newer amps like the V-4, and Silver 88 are products of his newer design as well as his current line of preamps. The output transformer in the V-4 is an offshoot of the design used in the M-135's and that design took many years of experimentation just to get everything just right. Quicksilver is our favorite tube amplifier, particularly if you live on the neighboring islands. Chances are, if anything goes wrong, that its probably a tube. Shipping a tube is far more inexpensive than shipping a 50 pound amp !....That is an important consideration in these days of ever rising gas prices (and shipping rates).
