This jewel has always been my pride and joy to restored and owned even with so many hours must be tended to for a proper restoration.
The basic player bears on the success of TD124 and shares its E50 motor for the changer automation.
With only 4000 units produced, I had successfully restored and sold a bit over 1% of its population so far.
Though this is my first time listing this precious machine here just to test the water for interest.
Certainly, TD224 is not for everyone taste but leaned rather for collector purposes.
The restoration project of this changer can only be successfull by totally overhauling the whole mechanism parts. Keep in mind that the over half century old machine lubricated with grease that had been hardened and became hard putty, thus burdon the motor
This must all be removed, cleaned and re-lubricated to ease the load of the motor as designed.
The E50 motor also rebuilt with the condenser cap and mounting grommets replaced.
The manual switch is cleaned and adjusted with new spring to avoid sluggish start or stop.
New belt and idler wheel are installed and all the bearings cleaned and lubricated.
The BtD 12s (Thorens best tonearm IMO) rebuilt with bearing balls replaced, counterweight trust rubber coupling connector replaced and muting switch readjusted and cleaned (can be eliminated per request)
The plinth included with the sale is a solid plinth, studded with silicone gel to better absorb noise of the changer, but mostly just for the player itself.
This does a tremendous job of doing so to compare to the original one.
Please note that this is just to reduce the changer noise not to eliminate all the audible noise of the changer.
The frame is an old drift African Wenge lumber that had been treated and coated with thick glossy enamel.
A full size acrylic dust cover that allows the changer to operate can be fabricated for $225 extra.
With LED illumination $300
A few of these units are still sitting in my fault awaited to be revealed once again.
If you need one with just the original plinth, or custom made to your spec, please contact me.
Also available are many of the old original plinths for sale.
The felt sweeper that mount on the changer arm is included.
Output from the tonearm is modified to DIN/ RCA jacks.
Shipping this unit has to be done in two boxes for domestic and will be crated for International.
The motor unit will have a few mechanisms taped and tied for shipping, and must be removed by buyer prior to operate.
I will drive, deliver and setup within 50 miles radius at no charge or more miles at buyer’s expense.
If you have any question on restoring your TD224, feel free to contact me, I will do my best to assist you.
Keep in mind though, even I had done many of these, but this is not something that I have in the back of my head, so bear with me.
Paypal please add 3.5% domestic and $.5% International.
