Hello to all Vinylistas out there...
There are various possibilities of achieving a base for a vintage Garrard 301/401, Thorens 124 or Technics SP 10 - some are better, some are worse.
The vast majority of plinths offered today are mass loaded, multi layered NOT decoupled designs.
It is easy to tame the vibrations of a powerful idler drive motor using a heavy plinth. So everybody can bond multiple layers of material to achieve an 'okay' result. In these constructions the mechanical shortcomings of the device are concealed but not healed, since the flip side of using lot of mass is also storing a lot of energy.
So the rumble of the motor and spindle noise isn't gone but changed into other frequencies and interacting with the recorded music in no good way.
Even worse, they tend to rob the music of its vitality. Quite often a Garrard or Thorens in such mass loaded plinth seems to sound correctly as far as hi-fi is concerned but in the long run it portrays dull and uninspiring.
On the other hand, there are very few designs that work consciously with the interaction of different materials, balanced mass and clever decoupling designs. In my humble opinion this is the silver bullet for bringing back the recorded music to your ear, to your soul...
And this is the route I've followed for the last ten years - and more than 100 satisfied customers all over the world encourage me in this development. This has been an evolution from the first squash ball design to the current high specialized adjustable Delrin/Sorbothane bearing with special sandwich bonded motorboards.
Highest requirements at the materials I use and skilled workmanship is a matter of course !
